Bean Aphids: Aphis craccivora    

Symptoms of damage

  • Nymphs and adults suck the sap from leaflets, stem and pods.
  • The young leaves of seedlings become twisted
  • Aphids secretes honeydew during feeding which attracts honeydew
  • Excessive feeding leads to yellowing and wilting
  • It transmits cucumber mosaic virus in greengram

Identification of the pest

  • The adults are black and shiny, upto 2 mm long and some are winged.
  • Nymphs are covered with waxy coating.
  • Nymphal period is 5–8 days
  • Total life cycle - 11–14 days.

Management

  • Install yellow stocky traps (@ 5/ac) to reduce the aphid population
  • Ladybird beetles (Coccinellaseptempunctata, Brumussuturalisand Harmonia dimidiata) and green lacewings (Chrysoperlazastrowi) are efficient predators to reduce population of aphids
  • Spray with 5% crude neem extract or 2% neem oil 3000 ppm
  • Spray any one of the following insecticides
  • Thiamethoxam 25 % WG @ 40 g/ac
  • Imidacloprid 17.80 % SL @ 40 ml/ac
  • Acetamiprid 20 % SP @ 20 g/ac
  • Buprofezin 25 % SC@ 400 ml/ac
